The forever debate photos references v real life sessions

Like many artists, I have come involved in conversations regarding how we achieve our work. Photo references or Alla Prima.

I have come away from these discussions as it is a question of choice. I am 100% sure that most of us have used both processes.

As a woman artist with three children, it was a luxury to go out and paint. Between the chores, helping my husband with his business, my children and the weather, it happened a few times.

My favourite subject was still life and flowers. They all grew in our garden. There I could go and sketch a few but I loved to create compositions. I have never had any qualms about setting, making a few photos with different angles and producing a work.

However, I never copied entirely what I photographed. I interpreted according to my feelings.
